Obesity & Diabetes

OBESITY

WHO defines obesity as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.

Both obesity and overweight are major risk factors and fore –runners for a number of chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Obesity itself is a chronic syndrome. Once considered a problem only in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. Obesity not only poses a risk to health but also has a more grave undesirable impact on one’s social outlook which ultimately leads to low self esteem and grievous psychological impact.

It is for these very reasons that one must take serious and earnest efforts to eliminate this risk and preserve their health.

Why people can’t shed off or unable to maintain the shed off weight?

The reasons why one’s efforts in the pursuit to shed off this unnecessary excess pounds is that people set unrealistic goals and prefer a fast solution without even assessing the safety quotient of the aids and methods used.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION

This is the new scientific and safe concept which has been introduced to bring about weight loss in a well –structured manner. The protocol of this concept is a combination of DIET, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION and STRESS MANAGEMENT.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION

MULTI-COMPONENT INTERVENTION

FITNESS AND MEDICAL STATUS EVALUATION

This is an integral part of our program.

Fitness testings are done to know the level of strength, flexibility and cardiovascular capacity .It gives us an idea about person’s present fitness level and physical limitations if any ;which helps to formulate appropriate and graded individualized fitness program.
Medical status evaluation includes blood testing for important parameters like hemoglobin level, blood sugar level, lipid levels. Also medical examination is done. This helps us to know persons nutrition status and risk factors ,which are guidelines for goal setting and diet planning.

DIET

We use different methods that are scientific, new and safe like

    1. calorie cutting
    2. portion control,
    3. Volumetrics
    4. low fat versus low carbohydrate
    5. telephonic contact

These changes are initiated only after assessing the food behavior, understanding the individual’s food preferences and his comfort levels and are tailor-made of the individual by our medical nutritionist.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

This is a universally accepted measure to lose weight, improve health and preserve good health.
Majority of individuals lead lives of minimal physical exertion and almost or completely sedentary lives. Thus like the diet modifications these activities are introduced gradually and in small proportions. Individuals are groomed and encouraged to mould their daily routines into a medium of physical activity. The activities incorporated in ones lives have no addition cost in terms of money or time as they are structured into daily regular routines thus making it easy to follow. In the process, fitness is promoted with a gradual increase in activity over time.

BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION

This envelopes a methodology that is used to adopt and encourage positive, effective and definite changes in diet and level of physical activity. The predominant strategies used are

  1. SELF –MONITORING-Appreciated by generating the individual’s awareness in the domain of their present and ideal weights, types and amount of food to be consumed by them& their level of physical activity.
  2. GOAL SETTING-this involves the further engineering of the program for weight loss and devising a suitable method to go about it.
  3. STIMULUS CONTROL- involves making changes in their own environment to achieve their set goals.
  4. PROBLEM –SOLVING-this includes identifying and overcoming the hurdles that prevent one from attaining and maintaining good health and a healthy lifestyle.
  5. COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING-This involves the elimination of unhealthy beliefs and perceptions that one possesses in terms of health, diet and lifestyles

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

Sessions will cover- basics of nutrition, basic food grops, balanced diets, how to manage our own diet for weight loss, diet for children etc

Also, topics like-importance of target heart rate, how to monitor own pulse rate, will be covered.

COMORBID CONDITIONS

These are the conditions wherein obesity is coupled with other deleterious conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and musculo-skeletal conditions.

This newly formulated scientific LIFETSYLE INTERVENTION is proven to be highly fruitful and efficacious in such comorbid conditions

DIABETES

Over 30 million have now been diagnosed with diabetes in India. The CPR (Crude prevalence rate) in the urban areas of India is thought to be 9 per cent. In rural areas, the prevalence is approximately 3 per cent of the total population. The population of India is now more than 1000 million: this helps to give an idea of the scale of the problem. The estimate of the actual number of diabetics in India is around 40 million. This means that India actually has the highest number of diabetics of any one country in the entire world.
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where in human body does not produce or properly uses insulin, a hormone that is required to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by constant high levels of blood glucose (sugar). Diabetes mellitus is controllable to a great extent. So, you need to have thorough diabetes information to manage this it successfully. The control of diabetes mostly depends on the patient and it is his/her responsibility to take care of their diet, exercise and medication. Advances in diabetes research have led to better ways of controlling diabetes and treating its complications. But more importantly keeping your blood sugar level within your target range can help you live a long &healthy life with diabetes.

Our approach for diabetic management is through LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION

This is the new scientific and safe concept which has been introduced to manage DIABETES in a well –structured manner.
These interventions include

  • Education, after all you should know what makes your blood sugar level rise or fall thus leading to an effective prevention.
  • Computer-assisted programmes which are beneficial in terms of metabolic and psychosocial outcomes through education and self-management.
  • Behavioral modification, motivational interviewing, patient empowerment
  • Frequent contact with health professionals, telephonic contact and self-monitoring

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION - MULTI-COMPONENT INTERVENTION

DIET-We use different methods that are scientific, new and safe like

  1. Co-ordination of your meals and medication-too little/too much food in comparison to your medication may cause your blood sugar level to go a dangerously low/high level respectively.
  2. calorie cutting
  3. portion control,
  4. Volumetrics

These changes are initiated only after assessing and understanding the individual’s food preferences, his blood parameters and are tailor-made of the individual by our medical nutritionist.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY- when you exercise your muscles use sugar (glucose) for energy &regular physical activity improves your body’s response to insulin & thus lower your blood sugar level. However it is essential to get your doctor’s go-ahead nod as a majority of individuals lead lives of minimal physical exertion and almost or completely sedentary lives and thus a sudden transition could have a deleterious impact. Individuals are groomed and encouraged to mould their daily routines into a medium of physical activity and are also trained to adjust the diabetes management & treatment plan as needed. The activities incorporated in ones lives have no addition cost in terms of money or time as they are structured into daily regular routines thus making it easy to follow.

MEDICATION-

Insulin and other diabetic medications are designed to lower your blood sugar levels and are effective if taken at the appropriate time and dose, as guided by your physician.
